Custom MMA Shorts: Fabric, Fit and Design Guide for Fight Brands

Custom MMA Vale Tudo Shorts Design 1 – mma vale tudo shorts mock-up made by Naxon Sports, Sialkot

MMA shorts take more strain than almost any other piece of training gear. They have to stretch for high kicks, survive grappling, dry fast and still look good on camera. If you are launching a fight brand or ordering for your gym, the choices you make on fabric, cut and printing decide whether your shorts get reordered or returned. This guide walks through each decision.

What makes a good pair of MMA shorts

Fighters judge shorts on three things: freedom of movement, a waistband that stays put, and durability. A great design will not save a pair that tears at the crotch during a scramble. Good shorts have:

  • A stretch panel or gusset in the crotch so the fighter can kick and sprawl without restriction
  • Side splits that open the leg for kicks and guard work
  • Reinforced seams at the crotch, side splits and waistband
  • Light, quick-drying fabric that does not hold sweat
  • A closure that stays secure when someone grabs the shorts

Choosing the fabric

Most custom MMA shorts are made from polyester, because it takes sublimation printing well and dries quickly. The weave makes a big difference to the feel.

Ask your manufacturer for physical swatches before you decide. Stretch and handfeel are hard to judge from a photo.

Waistbands and closures

The closure is the detail fighters notice first. Common options are:

  • Velcro fly with lace-up drawcord: the classic fight-short closure. Easy to adjust and very secure.
  • Velcro only: quick on and off, but can loosen in long grappling rounds.
  • Elastic waist with drawcord: comfortable for training and hybrid shorts, with no hard edges.

Make sure the inside of the waistband is smooth. Exposed Velcro scratches training partners and catches on rash guards.

Cuts and lengths

  • Traditional fight shorts: mid-thigh to knee length, with side splits. The best-known look in MMA.
  • Hybrid or training shorts: shorter and lighter, with an elastic waist, for gym sessions and conditioning.
  • Vale tudo shorts: short, tight compression-style shorts used for grappling and competition.
  • Women’s cuts: adjusted waist and hip shaping. Do not just resize a men’s pattern.

Many brands launch with one fight short and one training short, then add matching rash guards to sell as a set.

Printing and branding options

  • Sublimation: the ink becomes part of the polyester, so designs never crack or peel. It allows unlimited colours and all-over graphics at no extra cost per colour. This is the most popular choice for MMA shorts.
  • Embroidery: a premium look for logos on the waistband or leg. It adds weight and cost, so keep it small.
  • Heat transfer and silicone badges: good for small logos and sponsor marks on plain-colour shorts.

What affects the price

The cost of custom MMA shorts depends on:

  1. Fabric: 4-way stretch and microfibre cost more than basic polyester.
  2. Construction: crotch gussets, reinforced splits and inner pockets add sewing time.
  3. Closure: Velcro and drawcord systems cost more than a plain elastic waist.
  4. Branding: sublimation is usually the best value. Embroidery adds a cost per piece.
  5. Quantity: the price per piece drops as your order grows. Our minimum is 30 pieces per design, with sizes mixed.
